In Switzerland, primary school textbooks in the natural sciences are not what they should be. Researchers would like to play a greater role in bringing science to school children – but there are big hurdles to overcome.

From 1981 to 1984 he ran the outside facility of the Swiss TPH in Ifakara in Tanzania (today the Ifakara Health Institute). He has been awarded honorary doctorates by the University of Neuchâtel and the University of Brisbane. Since 2016 he has presided over the Swiss Academy of Sciences.
